Kodibuntu – convert your old PC in a MediaPlayer

I wanna build a Media-Player PC mostly to play music , so I will use hardware I currently have:

  • An old notebook
  • A monitor
  • A wireless keyboard (as a remote control)
  • Speakers

Installation

First, we need to download the ISO file. I’ve been searching but I couldn’t find an updated veresion of Kodibuntu, seems like it’s discontinued. I was able to download a full ISO of Kodibuntu 14 from here, it’s 800MB.  :

http://kodibuntu.en.uptodown.com/ubuntu?

I will proceed with a full installation because I want to use that computer only to play music. If you want to install kodi in a workstation , you may use the following PPA

sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kodi

Once the download is finished, I will create a USB drive to boot the computer and install it.

To create the boot USB drive I use unetbootin, and select the ISO image I downloaded previously.

Pressing F12 while I’m booting the computer lets me to choose the boot device and I choose the USB drive. Then I got the menu to start the Kodibuntu installation.

You may wanna try Geexbox , it`s a Kodi derivative but its pretty lightweight – its ISO is just only 189mb. It boots pretty fast ! and includes just what you need to play multimedia content.
