Setting up Conky & Themes on Linux Mint 18.2

Setting up Conky

If you wanna tune up your desktop with system indicators Conky is the best choice. A highly valued application to display metrics related to the System Information in your desktop (RAM, Processor load, HDD load , etc).

Fist we’ll install Conky. Type the following command in your terminal.

sudo apt-get install conky-all

A good Conky’s companion is Conky Manager. It allows you to manage and apply your Conky Themes. With few clicks you can enable several themes.

You can add their PPA and install from the command line.

sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:teejee2008/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install conky-manager

To avoid black backgrounds in themes you’ll need to change its settings.

Go to Edit/Widgets/Transparency

Select Transparency Type: Transparent

And voila! themes are fully integrated with your desktop wallpaper. The following theme is MIUI with transparency:

Adding New Themes

Conky Manager has an option to setup additional themes folders.

I will use ~/Public/MyThemes to download new themes and Conky Manger will load them .

Helix Conky Theme (date only)

Download Helix Conky Theme

I downloaded several themes from devianart  but most of them requires additional software installation, manual settings or run the config file manually in the CLI.

To run a ConkyTheme script type the following command:

conky --config=./filename

Conky Manager is over, the last update was in 2014.
All conky manager themes are written in ancient lua language; most themes do not work in the new lua language that comes in linuxmint 18.2.
